EN 12193:2018 Standard
The EN 12193:2018 is the European standard that defines lighting requirements for sports facilities. It specifies three lighting classes based on competition level:
Lighting Classes
Class I - International
Top level competition such as international and national competition which will generally involve large spectator capacities with long potential viewing distances. Top level training can also be included in this class. For some sports the requirements of the governing body might take precedence over the values in this standard.
Class II - Regional
Mid-level competition such as regional or local club competition which generally involve medium size spectator capacities with medium viewing distances. High level training can also be included in this class.
Class III - Recreational
Low level competition such as local or small club competition which generally do not involve spectators. General training, physical education (school sports) and recreational activities will also come into this category.
Useful Terms
Principal Area (PA): Actual playing area needed for the performance of a certain sport.
Total Area (TA): Area generally comprising the principal area (PA) plus an additional safety area outside the principal area.
Grid points for measurement and calculation: Arrangement of calculation and measurement points and their number in each dimension of the reference area.
Average illuminance over a surface: Illuminance averaged over the specified surface. Note: Horizontal illuminance calculated at ground level (0 m) and vertical illuminance calculated at a height of 1.5 m, unless stated otherwise.
