Many LED luminaires on the Greek market do not state a warranty — instead, they cite a “50,000-hour lifespan.” Understanding what this actually means is critical for making an informed purchasing decision.
Lifespan Claims vs Real Warranty
The advertised lifespan refers to the LED chip alone — not to the entire luminaire. Specifically, it indicates the time until the light output drops to 70% (L70) or 80% (L80) of its initial brightness.
The most vulnerable part of any LED luminaire is the driver (power supply). If the driver fails, the luminaire stops working entirely — regardless of how many hours the LED chip can theoretically last.
This is why the actual product warranty matters far more than theoretical lifespan claims.
